The holy city of Puri is at a distance of 60 km from Bhubaneswar, the
capital city of Orissa. It is one of the four holiest points of piligrimage
for Hindus. The deity of the city, Lord Jaganath, whose temple was built way
back in the 12th century, is not only of great religious reverence to the
people of Orissa, but is revered by thousands of piligrims from every part
of the country. The best time to visit this temple is during the Ratha Yatra
in the month of June-July, when the intense veneration of Lord Jagannath,
reaches its zenith.
Konark Temple
The magnificent and mind-boggling Sun Temple at Konark is the climax of
Orissan temple architecture, and one of the most awesome monuments of
religious architecture in the world. The massive structure now in ruins,
sits in solitary splendour surrounded by restless sand. The temple was built
by the King Narshimadeva in the 13th century. The whole temple was shaped in
the shape of a huge chariot, carrying the Sun God (Surya) across the
heavens.
