Udupi
Udupi an important Vaishnavite coastal town in
Karnataka, an open Square surrounded by
temples and mutts. Udupi in Karnataka is a fairly large and upcoming town
and is the birth place of the 12th century saint Madhvacharya, the great
Sanskrit Philosopher (about 700 year ago). Udupi in Karnataka is known for
the famous temple here, which has a fascinating idol of Lord Krishna that is
richly adorned with jewels.
Madhvacharya set up eight sanyasi mutts in the Udupi town and is one of
Karnataka's most important pilgrimage sites. Udupi is also known for its
delicious cuisine and Udupi restaurants all over the country.
The 'Paryaya' festival held once in two years when the management of the
temple changes hands is a spectacular festival drawing thousands of devotees
from all over the country.
Accessibility
Airlines : One can either land in the Bangalore or
Mangalore airport to reach Udupi, from where one can pick a bus or car to
reach the town of Udupi.
Bus Lines : Udupi is well-connected to Bangalore and
Mysore. Regular buses ply from Mangalore.

Charming Spots near Udupi
Udupi Shri Krishna
It is believed that the idol of Sri Krishna in Balarupa here is installed
by Sri Madhvacharya. It is also believed that the was made by Viswakarma
himself out of Saligrama stone with the consent of Sri Krishna.
Shri Krishna Mutt
Udupi is famous for its Sri Krishna Mutt which though small is quite
beautiful. There is no front door for this mutt. Instead there is a small
window through which one could always get the darshana of the idol from
outside the mutt. In front of the window there is a small 'gopuram'. The
main entrance to the mutt is on the southern side. As on enters, on the
right side is a tank called Madhwa Pushkarani. This tank has stone steps all
round and a mantapam in the center.
Sri
Anathesvara Temple
This temple situated in the centre of the temple square is dedicated to
Lord Vishnu. Its sanctuary and nearby columned halls are surrounded by a
walled passage, the latter covered with sloping stone slabs. The rear panel,
also of wood, shows a 'linga' flanked by elephants, guardians, peacocks and
lotuses. A stone altar with a finely sculpted base is located immediately
outside the east entrance to the Temple. The eight important mutts are
located around the temples in the Car Street.
Chandramauleshvara Temple
The temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated in the middle of the Temple
Square. The sanctuary with the idol is square shaped with a pyramidal roof.
